چکیده

Background and aims – A linear morphometric analysis of three taxa the Tillandsia erubescens complex, composed T. var. arroyoensis , patentibracteata is presented to evaluate their circumscription. Additionally, taxonomic rank as varieties or species discussed considering obtained results. Geographic distribution, influence climate, elevation, geographic distance on morphological differences between entities explored. Material methods Of a total 110 herbarium specimens reviewed, 44 were measured. These previously identified . Factor cluster analyses performed using 16 quantitative characters. The resulting groups considered supported by characters, distributions plotted against Mexican biogeographic provinces. single Mantel test was correlation morphology climatic variables, distance. Key results referred separated morphometrically from other two varieties. most important characters differentiate size, width length leaf sheath blade, number flowers. non-overlapping geographical distribution supports recognition independent entities. Our study did not support separation which also reflected overlapping distributions. Both precipitation correlated with among species. Conclusion different species, while no evidence found maintain We provide set that can be used distinguish including blade width, Morphological agree studied taxa.

Plastid degeneration in Tillandsia (Bromeliaceae) provides evidence about the origin of multilamellar bodies in plants

Vesicle-like structures containing several to numerous concentric membranes, called multilamellar bodies (MLBs), are present both in animal and plant cells. The origin of MLBs in animal cells has been elucidated partially, while that of plant MLBs is unknown. MLBs in plant cells are present in the cytoplasm, at the interface of cytoplasm and vacuole, and inside vacuoles. 5 This suggests that th...

First record of bat-pollination in the species-rich genus Tillandsia (Bromeliaceae).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Bromeliaceae is a species-rich neotropical plant family that uses a variety of pollinators, principally vertebrates. Tillandsia is the most diverse genus, and includes more than one-third of all bromeliad species. Within this genus, the majority of species rely on diurnal pollination by hummingbirds; however, the flowers of some Tillandsia species show some characteristics t...

It takes two to tango: self incompatibility in the bromeliad Tillandsia streptophylla (Bromeliaceae) in Mexico.

Floral phenology and breeding system of Tillandsia streptophylla (Bromeliaceae) were studied in a low inundated forest in Yucatan, Mexico. During the flowering season, from March to August, terminal scapose 1-branched, paniculate inflorescences are produced with one flower per branch opening per day, over a period of 11-29 days. Flowers are tubular, light violet, with the stigma placed below th...
